MONTHS of research looking at the freshwater and marine wildlife around Ulverston has led to the creation of a beautifully illustrated book.

Artist Ellie Chaney has spent the last nine months researching wildlife in the area around the historic Sir John Barrow Cottage.

And now, ‘Tiny Voyages of Discovery’, an illustrated journey down Dragley Beck out to Morecambe Bay, is set to be launched on Saturday.

Ellie’s work was commissioned by locally based arts organisation Artspace as part of their 2018 project “SJB3, Manners as Amusements”, which has been based at the cottage. The book is inspired by the story of Lady Barrow, formerly Ann Maria Truter, who was an accomplished botanical illustrator in her own right.

The project has included a series of arts sessions at Sir John Barrow School with artist and project manager John Hall, outdoor arts specialist Alex Blackmore, felter Lex Blakeway and storyteller Dominic Kelly.

Dominic’s work resulted in a performance by the school’s Year Three as part of Furness Tradition Festival. Alex has produced a giant ritual ‘obby ‘oss which will be making an appearance in town later this month, and Lex has produced a piece based on Truter’s work which will be shared between the Cottage and the Sir John Barrow Monument, when they open for visitors again next year.

“The project has produced some great work, and Ellie’s book is a very special part of that,” said John.

“Anyone familiar with her work will know what to expect from the research, the drawings and text and the quality of the production.

“It’s something that will appeal to anyone interested in the town and its ecology, and a beautiful and affordable addition to any local studies collection. Needless to say it makes a great Christmas present.”

The book will be launched from 10am to 12.30pm at Ulverston Library. Visitors can meet Ellie to discuss the work and buy the book.

“Tiny Voyages Of Discovery” will also be available from The Tinners Rabbit and from Suttons Bookshop.
