YEARS of playing music together has brought a wonderful, deep affinity between Jenn Butterworth and Laura-Beth Salter.

Jenn is one of the busiest and most sought after guitar players on the roots music scene in Scotland playing with Kinnaris Quintet, Ryan Young, Ross Ainslie and Ali Hutton, Songs of Separation and many more.

Mandolin playing Laura-Beth is similarly in great demand, well-known on the Glasgow folk and roots scene, a founding member of renowned folk band The Shee and was nominated for the MG Alba Composer of the year award in 2013 after the success of her Celtic Connections commission and debut album Breathe.

Both share the spotlight at Ulverston's Coronation Hall Supper Room on Thursday, November 29, courtesy of Furness Tradition.

Laura-Beth hails from Lincolnshire, where her parents immersed her in a diverse range of musical influences from an early age, including old-time, bluegrass and blues music. Feeling a desire to progress further, she moved to Newcastle to study mandolin and composition on the folk music degree course where she met her fellow band members in The Shee. Now, although heavily rooted in American traditional music, Laura-Beth works on a range of projects within the Scottish traditional music scene, most recently her duo with Jenn, The Kinnaris Quintet and a new cross-over project alongside Ali Hutton (Old Blind Dogs) and Andrea Gobbi (Laki Mera).

It was in Glasgow that Jenn met and formed the duo with Laura-Beth. And after jamming with folk percussionist Steve Forman and Nae Plans duo Hamish Napier and Adam Sutherland they formed The Blas Collective, and have a residency in one of Glasgow’s famous live music venues Bar Bloc. The Blas and the local session scene provided Jenn and Laura-Beth with a vibrant and creative space to experiment with and develop their sound, which is a reflection on their individual musical backgrounds and the thriving and progressive Glasgow folk music scene.

Apparently, Jenn and Laura-Beth particularly enjoy their duo gigs with their virtuoso musicianship, great vocals and harmonies delivering a wide repertoire of traditional and contemporary songs and tunes from their Scots, English and Americana musical backgrounds. Box office 01229-587140.
