The engineering awards held at Furness College, with the lucky winners taking home bursary’s and Amazon vouchers for their various engineering projects.

Barrow and District Association of Engineers hosted the event where different schools from the area had their engineering projects displayed and were recognised for their efforts.

Denis Lidstone, student bursary co-ordinator for Barrow and District Association of Engineers said: "This awards ceremony is here not just to recognise the achievements of the students but to also encourage students of the future to get involved with STEM subjects."

"We don't just want students to take part in these classes but we also want them to show an active interest in what's happening by taking part in extra curricula activities.

"Surprisingly we near enough had a 50/50 split between boys and girls which is a pleasant surprise because of engineering previously being a male dominated field."

Mr Lidstone spoke praises of the various different projects from each school, noting the different approaches taken by each school, drawing particular attention to Walney School, whose students manufactured birdhouses and examined their sustainability.

Mr Lidstone said: "The kids at Walney school actually made note of materials used, sustainability and the cost of manufacturing if the production were to be run as a business which I think is a really unique idea."

The winners of the individual bursaries were presented by the chief executive of University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay Foundation Trust, Aaron Cummins.

Bursaries were awarded in different categories ranging from the best of the best, an award for a school student who performed better than all other students, a £300 award to craft and technical engineering apprentices, and a £1,200 university grant to a graduating A Level student doing a scholarship in engineering.

The winner of the university grant is required to make a full presentation and interview to the BDAE board.

Harry Scott, who attended Ulverston Victoria High School was the grant winner and is now studying on a scholarship at the Uni of Sheffield.
