A MAIN road was closed for several hours after a two-car crash.

Firefighters, police and paramedics were called to The Hill near Millom at 11.41pm on Saturday.

The collision on the A5093 involved two vehicles and two people were trapped inside the cars.

The crash involved a total of eight casualties and both roads out of Millom were closed while emergency services dealt with the incident.

Fire crews, from Millom and Bootle, were at the scene for two hours. Firefighters used specialist cutting equipment to release two people from the wreckage. 

The road was still understood to be closed at 3am.

The Coastguard has today (Monday) confirmed the Millom Coastguard team assisted the emergency services and prepared a site to allow the Coastguard helicopter to land at the scene. 

The helicopter is understood to have flown to the Royal Preston Hospital with at least one of the casualties critically injured. 

The North West Air Ambulance can currently fly during daylight hours only because vsibility is dramatically reduced outside of daylight hours. Some air ambulances in other parts of the UK are permitted to fly at night.
