CHILDREN from an Ormsgill primary school have each received a thank you card from Harry and Meghan after they sent them a congratulations letter when they were married in May.

Last year's year one children from St Pius X Catholic School each sent a congratulations card to The Duke and Duchess of Sussex when they were married on the 19 May 2018.

Each child in the class handcrafted their own letter during a weeks long Royal celebration at the school.

The thank you card itself read: "Their Royal Highnesses have been overwhelmed by all the messages they have received and were immensely touched that the children made such special cards.

"This letter comes with The Duke and Duchess of Sussex's warmest thanks and very best wishes."

Due to the large amount of congratulations cards that the couple received for their wedding it has only been now that they have been able to respond, with each child receiving their very own thank you card on Tuesday.

Kevin McGoldrick, headteacher of St Pius X Catholic School, said: "They were all very excited when I came down to see the class saying we had received some very important post from some very important people.

"They were all thrilled and each one had their own individual message for the children.

"The idea to write to The Duke and Duchess of Sussex was originally our year one teacher's idea, Ruth Saddler, who has unfortunately moved on to another school, but I have mentioned it to her and she was also thrilled to get some feedback."

Alongside this, at the time of the wedding the whole school was taking part in a weeks long Royal celebration.

Emma Woodend, a teaching assistant for reception, said: "All week long the children were involved in a variety of different royal and wedding themed activities.

"We encouraged the children to bring in pictures from their parents wedding and the staff even brought in their very own wedding dresses to show the children.

"We also helped the children to make their own wedding invitations, bunting and table cloths."

During the week, the children from year six also staged their very own mock wedding where they had to nominate a bride and groom among the class.

Mrs Woodend said: "They all loved it so much that they decided to stage their own in the playground."
