A RECRUITMENT drive has been re-launched in Barrow to find on-call firefighters to serve their community.

Cumbria County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service has renewed its appeal for on-call firefighters after previous quests to recruit failed to fill all the roles they have available.

Barrow Fire Station are raising awareness of their open evening on Wednesday, November 14 to drum up interest for more on-call firefighters to join the team.

Part-time firefighters are needed for a newly-created crew which will be based at Barrow Fire Station from Spring 2019.

The event will take place at 6pm at the fire station, lasting for approximately two hours.

It will provide an opportunity to talk to serving firefighters and find out what the job entails, including extensive information on how tough the role is.

Roger Exley, Station Manager for Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service, said: “It is a new concept for the town and we are trying to introduce a fire engine with a part-time crew in Barrow.

“It is a challenging job that takes a lot of commitment, so we want to highlight this open day on Wednesday so people can come down and learn about the ins and outs of the role.”

He added: “It is a fantastic job with a lot of rewards.

“You will learn lot of great skills, professionalism and teamwork which will make a huge difference to your CV in the future.”

The main purpose of the job is to act as an integral part of an emergency response team by working with and within the community to prevent emergencies occurring.

Applicants are required to give notice to the number of hours they can work per week.

Watch manager Jamie Coward, said finding people who fully understand the job has been tough.

He said: “In Barrow people don’t fully understand what an on-call firefighter is.

“We want to raise this open evening to make people come down and find out what it is all about.”

“We want the people to come through the door, get all the information they want and see if they want to take it further.

“There are so many variables to take into consideration and that is where people don’t understand the job.

“We want as many people as possible to come on Wednesday night so they can learn what it takes and if they are interested.”
