WITH the Fortnite craze engrossing children and keeping them glued to their games consoles, parents are trying to find ways of prising their controllers out of their hands.

With each games last about 20 minutes, here's some things that kids can do in just 20 minutes.

1 Arrange a game of football. In 20 minutes, you can play half a five-a-side match. Each half lasts around 20 minutes.

2 Go swimming. A strong swimmer could cover up to 20 laps of the pool in 20 minutes with rest breaks included. That’s about 1,000m.

3 Bake a cake.You can bake a basic sponge cake in just 20 minutes and fill it with tasty raspberry jam.

4 Go for a walk

Walking at an average speed, you can cover a mile in 20 minutes. That’s around 2,000 steps.

5 Write a book. Maybe not a whole novel but in 20 minutes you could have a good attempt at a short story or even a fun poem.

6 Paint a picture.Try painting a picture of your best friend or a family member. Hide it for them to find or why not pop it in the post as a nice surprise.

7 Customise your clothes. Grab an old pair or t-shirt, some fabric paint, a pair of scissors and customise your clothes. Twenty minutes is all it takes to make something truly original.

8 Make your own slime. All you need to make slime is glue, bicarbonate of soda, food colouring, contact lens solution and any other extras you’d like to add like glitter A bit of mixing and kneading and hey presto, you have your own slime.

9 Teach yourself to dance. Follow a few tutorials and teach yourself some moves. Have a go at street dance, contemporary or try a bit of ballet.

10 Soak in the bath. A bath is a great way to relax. Throw in a sweet-scented bath bomb and enjoy the peace and quiet.

11 Clean out your pets. If you have pets who live in a hutch or cage, give them a clean out. Change their bedding, top up the water bottles and you’ll have very happy pets.

12 Paint your nails. With a free 20 minutes, you could treat yourself to a mini at home manicure. If you’re feeling artistic, try some fun nail art too.

13 Clean your bedroom. It may not be the most interesting thing to do with a spare 20 minutes, but it will make you mum happy and surely that’s worth more than anything?

14 Do your homework. If you have summer holiday homework from school, get it done early in the holidays. It’s amazing how much you can get through in 20 minutes.

15 Build a den. Head to your local park, find some broken branches and build a den.

16 Facetime grandma. When did you last catch up with grandparents? Facetime your grandma and grandad – it’ll be 20 minutes well spent.

17 Go for a bike ride. In 20 minutes, you can ride a couple of miles on a bike so strap on your helmet, head out and enjoy the city or countryside around you.

18 Write a song. Have a go at writing your own song and if you’re musical, create the tune to go with it.

19 Learn a language. Download an app or listen to some podcasts and start to teach yourself a new language. By the end of the summer you’ll be fluent.

20 Create your own movie. Why not get some friends round and make your own mini-movie. This may take a little longer than one game of Fortnite but could be enough to keep you busy all summer.
