THERE was a crowd of teddy bears at Askam in 1994 because the village school needed to raise cash for new equipment.
The Mail, on May 27, noted: “The bears took part in a three-day series of sponsored obstacle races, helped along by their friends in the nursery and reception classes.
“The youngsters were sponsored to complete the course – providing that their teddy managed to get round it in one piece as well.”
Teachers came up with the idea for the sponsored aces.
They wanted new tricycles for the nursery, science equipment for the reception class and items for the dressing-up corner.
More than 100 children and teddy bears took part in the races.
