A £12m housing scheme was being revived at the historic ironworks site at Backbarrow. Developers said the scheme could create 100 jobs.
Furness swimmer Vicki Thompson was named as the Channel Association's fastest English Channel swimmer of 2008 and was presented with the Sunny Lowry Trophy. Her time, recorded in July, was 15 hours and 10 minutes.
A semi-detached house at Conveys Avenue, Barrow, was offered for sale at £239,950. A terraced house in Oxford Street, Barrow, was £135,000.
25 YEARS AGO
The three-year restoration project at the Malt Kiln Parish Hall, Aldingham, was shortlisted for a national contest backed by the Prince of Wales. Work at the hall had cost £85,000.
A terraced house at Chatsworth Street, Barrow, was £23,500. A detached chalet home at West Shore Park, Walney, was £9,500.
Industry Minister Neil Hamilton backed road improvements to the A590 during a visit to Furness.
A special British Rail task force was visiting schools in South Cumbria in a bid to curb the antics of train vandals. A spokesman said the annual national cost of damage on the railways was £45m.
50 YEARS AGO
A new record was set at the Lakes Gliding Club at Walney, by Mr S. Wearing, of Lancaster, who reached 15,100ft in his Skylark 3 glider. He used oxygen tanks above 10,00ft as the cabin temperature dropped to minus 18C.
A campaign was launched in Barrow to encourage people to get rid of waste medicines by Barrow Home Safety Committee.
