CALLS for Ulverston property and land owners to sell for low-cost houses are growing amid fears over a shortage of houses in the town.

Homes for Ulverston Community Land Trust group is exploring several opportunities with a view to demonstrate a socially and environmentally sustainable approach to housing development.

The aim is to meet the communities needs and aspirations including permanent affordability.

Yesterday, Ulverston Councillor Mark Wilson, who met with members of Homes for Ulverston, said the potential for new housing is strong.

He said: "The prospective to work with H4US is positive because they are very keen to get new affordable houses in the area.

"There is a housing need in Ulverston and if we can get plans cemented with South Lakeland District Council, along with H4US, then it would be beneficial.

"We will look at forwarding the plans to SLDC and seek their advice on the matter.

"The idea should be popular within the local community because there is a big deficit in housing available, especially affordable housing for young people.

Mr Wilson indicated at the vacant Hartley's Brewery would be an ideal place for the development houses.

The Brewery has been closed since November 1991 and has seen many plans fall through, leaving a bitter taste within the local community.

Mr Wilson said the site is a perfect location for new homes.

"The brewery is a hotbed location that would be ideal for future developments.

"It has been closed for many years and has seen plans fail, but turning that into affordable housing would be an ideal start."

H4US have had plans to buy the vacant Ulverston Police Station but failed due to being sold to a higher bidder.

The station has been closed in 2015 due to not being fit for purpose.

Val Holden, Community Land Trust Secretary, said it is a shame but they have to get on with it.

"These things happen, you get priced out by a higher bidder and you have to accept that.

"The waiting lists grow ever longer and first time buyers continue to be priced out.

"Local Authorities are doing their bit by allocating sites for future housing which will provide some of the affordable homes that are needed."

She added: "Local people themselves are developing their own innovatory housing schemes.

"These are created via Community Land Trusts (CLTs) to maximise affordability and protect the homes for future generations."
