HEALTHY eating options were being put to the test back in 1997 with schools tying new methods to convince Furness youngsters to try fruit for lunch.
The Mail on October 23 pictured pupils at Askam Village School and noted: “South Cumbrian primary schools have been handing out free apples to encourage children to eat more healthily.
“The giveaway is all part of National Apple Day.
“Health promotion specialists worked with Cumbria Catering Service, which provides meals for the majority of the county’s schools."
Mark Blackshaw, of Cumbria Catering Services, said: “Research shows we all need at least five portions of fruit and vegetables daily and this campaign will endorse the importance of daily healthy eating habits.”
