A HUGE effort to raise funds was rewarded in 1996 with the official opening of the new Urswick Scout hut.

Scout leaders, with the help of the local community, started raising the £45,000 needed for a new home after the old wooden hut started rotting away.

The Mail, on Monday, September 23, noted: “A massive £13,800 was raised through donations.

“The new hut is equipped with a kitchen and two dormitories for 36 people for use by Scout groups, Guides and youth groups.

“The building was officially opened by James Cropper, Lord Lieutenant of Cumbria."

Warden at the upgraded camp, Peter Sharpe, told The Mail: “The site has always been a good one and the kids really love it but the leaders appreciate the better facilities.”
