WALNEY was the setting for summer fun day and the start of a weight reduction plan by a man who tipped the scales at just over 30st.
All the outdoor activities were organised by the Barrow Licensed Victuallers Association Ladies’ Auxiliary at the Castle House Hotel.
The Mail, on Monday, August 15, in 1994, recorded that Stan Mulgrew, from the island’s South End Caravan Park, was weighed at 30st 5lb at the start of a sponsored slim backed by Barrow market traders to raise cash for children’s charities.
The article noted: “For anyone who wanted to show off their throwing technique, there was a coconut shy and a welly throwing competition."
Jenny Cole, of the Ladies’ Auxiliary, said the event had raised more than £1,000.
She said: “It was a really good day.”
