AN ELDERLY couple were rescued from their car after becoming trapped in rising flood water.

Emergency services were called at 1pm on Wednesday to Eskmeals, near Bootle.

Furness Coastguard, Barrow firefighters, Millom Coastguard Rescue Team and Whitehaven Fire and Rescue were called.

Furness Coastguard dispatched a water rescue unit to the incident.

While arriving on scene the casualties had been extracted from their vehicle by Whitehaven Fire and Rescue.

Once satisfied that there was no more risk to life the team returned to Barrow to prepare the equipment for the next callout. 

Haverigg Inshore Rescue Team were also tasked to support.
