CUMBRIA fire service will be recruiting four firefighter apprentices to be based countywide.

Cumbria County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service is seeking people who want to work within their community to improve safety awareness, help protect the public and promote fire safety. Applicants undergo a rigorous selection process, including written and physical fitness tests, and successful candidates undertake an extensive training programme starting in February 2019.

The apprentices receive full training in the role of a professional firefighter and after successfully completing this training they then work alongside firefighter crew throughout the county.Applications must be made via the council’s website at cumbria.gov.uk. Applications close on Monday October 8. Training sessions to test fitness levels take place at Barrow Fire Station on October 2 and 16 from 5.50pm.

Barrow station manager Roger Exley said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to join Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service and receive full training to carry out the work of a firefighter. We are fully committed to our apprenticeship programme and offer a career path that can often lead to a permanent full-time firefighter role.”
