A MAN has been jailed for failing to carry out unpaid work after taking a car without consent.

Mohammed Ramzan, 38, of Douglas Street, Walney, pleaded guilty to failing to comply with a community order imposed in August 2017 after missing appointments with the Probation Service on December 14 and 21 last year.

Ramzan had completed one hour of the 80 ordered when he appeared at South Cumbria Magistrates' Court today (7).

Trystan Roberts, defending, said: "He has been unable to carry out more hours because of his family difficulties.

"His family has broken up and his partner is now in a new relationship with another man. He has four children and they have been phoning him on a daily basis distressed.

"He has upped and gone to Bolton to see them and missed his appointments.

"The original offence was for borrowing a car thinking he had permission to take it to Bolton to see his children, but that wasn't the case."

Ramzan was sentenced to 28 days in custody.
