AN entrepreneur who settled in Barrow a decade ago has spoken of his sadness after his family was targeted in a series of racist incidents.

Mohammed Ramzan, known locally as Mo Rammy, has been involved in a number of businesses since he moved to Barrow 10 years ago including the Little Elephant Indian restaurant and Crav'n fast food outlet in Dalton Road.

The 38-year-old looks after a number of ice cream vans owned by his family's business and during the summer holidays his two sons Zak, 18, and Harry, 15, have been working alongside the drivers to earn some pocket money.

This week he uploaded a shocking video to Facebook which appeared to show a number of children, some as young as eight, hurl racist abuse towards his two sons as well as throwing rocks and stones at the van.

"They were shouting some awful things like 'Go back to your own country'. I was born in this country, and so were my kids, it's a dreadful thing to say and you have to wonder where kids that age hear things like that," Mr Rammy said.

The incident happened at around 2.30pm in the Ormsgill area and Mr Rammy said he has reported it to police.

"At one point there were about 15 kids involved, throwing rocks and stones, and they followed the driver and my son who were left trapped in the van and terrified.

"I've been here 10 years and the Barrow community has been so welcoming; that community support is something you don't get in the big cities and everyone here looks out for everyone else.

"That's why it's all the more shocking to have something like this happen. I'm settled here, I've built a home here and am raising my kids here, it's so sad to see this sort of thing happening in Barrow."

Mr Ramzan says he has already been contacted by parents of some of the youngsters who he says has offered their apologies.

"This isn't the first time something like this has happened and some names have been passed onto police," he added.

The Mail has contacted Cumbria Police for a statement.
