Popular Cumbrian festival Kendal Calling will take place on the airwaves.

The festival, held in normal years at Lowther Deer Park near Penrith, will like most of the nation's festivals not be able to go ahead this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

But instead of staying silent throughout 2020, the festival will live on in the airwaves this week thanks to the launch of a new online radio station, Kendal Calling Radio.

The station broadcasts, which will last from 5pm on Thursday until midnight on Sunday, will feature snapshots of what has made the festival a success for nearly 15 years.

It will include conversation, festival memories of previous years and interactive moments to allow fans to get involved.

TV presenter Alex Winter and Maximo Park's Paul Smith will also be involved, as well as Tim Burgess and BBC Radio 6Music's Chris Hawkins.

Chris Hawkins will be joined by Simone Butler from Primal Scream, Paddy Considine, the Happy Mondays, 808 State and more all popping by for chats, and others.

The weekend of radio will round off with "The Kendal Calling Front Room Festival with Ross Buchanan", a special one-off takeover on Absolute Radio on Sunday night, broadcasting full sets and highlights from some of the best moments in the festival's history.

The show will feature sets and highlights from the Stereophonics, Elbow, Kaiser Chiefs, Kate Nash and others, alongside exclusive interviews and more.

Kendal Calling Radio will also be fundraising for the festival’s charity partners: North West Air Ambulance, Alder Hey Children’s Charity, Guide Dogs for the Blind, St John's Ambulance and Hospice at Home.

Listeners will be encouraged to buy from a range of limited-edition festival merchandise and donate, with proceeds split between the five charities.
