WE recently featured a nostalgia spread focusing on the Barrow Carnival in 1995.

As out archive files contained so many great photographs from the event, we thought we would revisit it with another article.

The Mail reported that sunshine matched the smiles on the faces of the organisers of the carnival in 1995 as thousands turned out to watch the big event.

The carnival was organised by Barrow Round Table, whose chairman Alan Rimmer said he was really pleased with people’s response to the event: “We have more floats than last year and people have out in a lot of hard work.”

The carnival sub-committee had been working away since the previous year’s year’s carnival, holding weekly meetings to make sure the event was a success again.

The team comprised Philip Scott, Peter Garwood, Ian Johnstone, Andy Tebay, Dave Burnham, Philip Heath and Alan Rimmer.

People from every float collected money as they passed along the streets of Barrow towards Parkview playing fields and all the cash raised would go to local charities.

In the previous 12 months Barrow Round Table had raised more than £10,000, which had been donated to numerous local causes, ranging from equipment for the hospital and the Croft, through to a guide dog for the blind and a Christmas party for more than 300 pensioners.

The carnival queen in 1995 was 17-year-old student Barrow Yvonne Herrington, of Hemplands Avenue, who was dressed in a traditional wedding-style outfit.

She was crowned inside Forum 28 and went on to lead the parade.
