An intrepid group from St Pius X School, Barrow, headed to London in May 1994 to see the sights.

Among the places they visited was 10 Downing Street, where they were lucky enough to get a special VIP chat with Norma Major, the Prime Minister’s wife.

A policeman had let the group of 35 year six pupils through the barrier so they could take better photos of the Prime Minster’s house.

Cheryl Leith, 11, said: “A big car drew up and Norma got out with two friends carrying some shopping.”

Mrs Major went over to the children and stood chatting with them about where they were from.

Teacher Susan Maile said Mrs Major had asked if they were down for a day trip.

Another highlight of the London trip was seeing the show Cats.

The pupils also had a tour of the Houses Of Parliament. Cheryl said she liked to the room with the 24 carat gold ceiling.

Jason said he was keen on Trafalgar Square with all its pigeons.

Pupils enjoyed the Science Museum, where there were plenty of hands-on exhibits and they could experiment with inventions.

And on the way home they stopped off at the Cadbury’s Museum in Birmingham, where they were able to taste some of the wares.

In 1995 children from St Pius X School took to the catwalk to display the latest clothes for kids during a school fashion show.

Fashions on display were not as bizarre as those seen on the backs of Naomi Campbell and other supermodels on the catwalks of Paris.

In fact, the clothes were from major stories and worn by the children in the show to raise money for school funds. The £140 raised would go towards a computer for the school.

In general, the clothes worn on the day had a sporty look for the boys with baggy, flowing outfits for the girls to wear.
