Budding young boffins and cooks of the future had an opportunity to boost their skills during an action-packed Sixers’ Training Day for Duddon and High Furness Cub Scouts in January 1995.

Youngsters from the 1st and 2nd Ulverston packs, along with groups from the 1st Pennington, 5th and 6th Duddon, attended the event, which was held at Pennington Memorial Hall.
To help break the ice after a welcoming introduction, leaders held a group flag break before splitting youngsters into tutor groups for three morning sessions, which included a scouting quiz, an activity game and a mass flag break.
After lunch, the training sessions continued with a host of activities, ranging from knotting, compass bearings, senses, simple cooking and games.
Other skills on hand included making a box/hat, how to look after Cub Scout uniforms, packing a rucksack, food from other countries, first aid in a box and simple science.

Children were able to choose three skills activities held during the afternoon.
Elizabeth Tucker, from the 1st Ulverston group, who was also assistant district commissioner for Cub Scouts in the Duddon and High Furness district, said: “The aim of the training day is for sixers to have a good time, lots of fun and go away more confident and full of ideas for their Akela.”
Meanwhile, in 1996 youngsters in Millom had been beavering about to mark the tenth anniversary of Beaver Scouts.
The Millom District Beaver Scouts, all aged six to eight years, celebrated the big occasion with Cumbria's assistant county commissioner Elizabeth Hall, assistant district commissioner Heather Grigg and her husband, Scout Association district commissioner Ian Grigg.

The Millom Beavers' only female member, Hannah McCluskey, joined in the four hours of celebrations.
The three colonies - Thwaites, 1st Holy Trinity and 3rd St George's - displayed banners which would be entered into a national competition.
