Many people defied the inclement weather to watch the procession and to see the various dancing troupes perform.

The carnival queen Samantha Bird was crowned by Mrs Shury, who had been the first carnival queen in 1938.

Mrs Shury said the ceremony brought back many happy memories. She wished Samantha a happy year.

The queen's attendants were: Ladies-in-waiting - Lowella Babbester and Rachael Bird. Flower girls - Mary Houston and Gemma Wilkinson.
