Keen grower Dick Sandford exhibited in the first Barrow Chrysanthemum Society show – and, still going strong, he had entries in the Diamond Jubilee show 60 years later in 1987.
Mr Sandford, 89, was one of the society’s founder members and had been one of its most successful exhibitioners over the years.
At the 1989 show in Barrow Civic Hall, he just missed repeating the previous year’s success.
He came second to T Lickess for the Coombs Challenge Cup.
Ken Knight spent a year growing the superb blooms which won him the Sir John and Lady Fisher Memorial Cup but he had to miss the day because he was in Canada.
Former England Rugby League captain Ron Jackson carried off the Federation Blue Ribbon with his three leeks.
Among the results were: Sir John and Lady Fisher cup, K Knight; Mr and Mrs James Fisher Bowl, E Hurley, Lady M Fisher Rose Bowl, L Burton; Fisher Trust Diamond Jubilee Trophy, T Hurley; Mrs Moyra Kellett Cup, L Burton; A Coombs Cup, T Lickess.
