So wrote The Mail’s reviewer of the event in October that year.

For the visitor’s ticket price they got some of the town’s top singers, a country rock band, a dancer, drama – and even bagpipes.

But the star of the show, said The Mail, was the Proms Orchestra.

Many of the towns top musicians – described as ‘an exceptionally talented lot’ – created a smooth well-disciplined sound with a mellow brass section balanced by some fine strings and enriched by the superb piano of Larry Johnson.

They set the scene for glamorous night and provided a wonderful platform for John Mario, Danny Patterson, The Adair Sisters, Peter Goude and Vanessa to show off their talents.

A bit of fun was injected as Neil Metcalfe and Sarah Flanagan performed a spoof potted version of Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat and drama came with Neil, Phil McIntosh and Christine Adair in a scene from The Phantom of the Opera.

Trevor Hird’s band The Fabulous Picasso Brothers created their own great atmosphere with some exciting numbers and must surely have won converts to their style of music, said The Mail.

‘If you love music firmly in the middle of the road, this is the night for you’ stated the reviewer.

In September 1997 The Mail reported that rehearsals were well under way for the Barrow Proms, set to be staged over three nights the following month.

Highlights were set to include a performance by the operatic group Lencore, including music from Carmen.
