IN 1995, the children of the Hindpool nursery went down to the woods to seek out where the teddy bears were having their picnic.

The excited youngsters were invited as part of a 132-child group on an adventure in Barrow park.

Everyone took part in a special sponsored stroll, before sitting down to a scrumptious picnic.

Every child and most of the staff members were accompanied to the picnic with their own teddy bear, who they could enjoy the food and sunshine with.

The money raised from the stroll would go toward celebrating the nursery's 21st birthday at a big part that was held on June 21 that year.

This was also Midsummer's Day.

Governor Sylvia Garnett said: "It was absolutely wonderful to see everyone out there together.

"The children loved every minute of it and so did the grown ups."

The weather was fine throughout, and the children were out and about around the park.

It was only once some rain appeared; and everyone went home a little weary.

The nursery's actual birthday was in October, but it was decided a summer celebration would be more fun.

Ex-pupils and staff members, teachers and parents were all invited along for the big day.

In 1994, Hindpool nursery children and staff celebrated as their new play platform was installed.

After receiving a £1,500 grant from local paper manufacturer Scotts, they were enabled to buy the platform which was set up in the corner of their room.

The top of the platform gave the children their own little corner, and a play area that had been curtained off underneath.

Judith Caine, from the nursery, said: "It is the first time we have had an upstairs and downstairs, and given them an experience that we could not give them before.

"It has really expanded the children's experience tremendously.

"It is a great success with them."

The nursery has also opened children's eyes to musical instruments and fun days.
