TODAY The Mail has looked back at the first day of peace with the celebration of VE day.

We are revisiting 1945 when our community was able to celebrate after six years of war.

From Duncan Street to Tay Street, Barrow was alive with laughter and cheers as tables lined the roads with neighbours, friends, and families.

The community listened to the historic VE speech made by Prime Minister Winston Churchill which was broadcast across the nation when the war ended.

The Women’s Institute revisited the first celebrations when they held the 50th anniversary celebration at Trinity Centre in Barrow in 2005. They marked the occasion by dressing in 1940’s clothing. That same year saw the Sea Cadets lay the wreath at the Barrow Cenotaph commemorating VE/VJ Day.
