THE crowds came out to greet two South Cumbrian visits by TV stars from Coronation Street 20 years ago.

In July 2000, Sally Dynevor, famous for her long-running role in the Granada soap opera as Sally Metcalfe, formerly Webster and Seddon, was taking a break from filming to open a summer fair at Grizedale Forest.

She had the chance to meet fans and even Henry Dobson’s pet pig.

The Mail, on Monday, May 22, recorded the arrival of Tina O’Brien to open the Cumbria Careers Centre, on Dalton Road, Barrow.

She was then 16 and playing the pregnant schoolgirl Sarah Lou Platt in the show.

Tina said: “I think this centre is a very good idea to help youngsters find a career that they love and enjoy like I have.”

Furness MP and health minister John Hutton was also at the official opening of the one-stop shop for careers and guidance, for youngsters and adults.

The Youth Inquiry Service was also to be based at the new building, offering advice on everything from relationships and health to drug and alcohol abuse.
