DOZENS of schools, groups and organisations hosted their own activities to mark the new millennium back in 2000 and in April many of them were brought together for a special celebration called the Barrow Millennium Showcase.

Perfect weather gave an opportunity to host music, dance, circus skills and comedy at several sites - including the new Town Square, next to Barrow Town Hall.

The Mail, on Saturday, April 8, noted: “Thousands of people enjoyed a spectacular and colourful event which began at 10am and continued throughout the day until 8pm.

“And the organisation, which involved staging hundreds of different activities at various venues around the town, went as smooth as clockwork.

“Not surprisingly, Barrow new Town Square was the magnet for outdoor activity.

“Attractions there included the Barracudas, Wild West Rangers, St Bernard’s School Ceilidh Band, Gem the Juggler, Askam Village School choir and performers from the Rachael Ashton Theatre Group.

“Children also joined in the circus workshops which continued through the day.”
