SILK stockings and camisoles were displayed in a Furness museum more used to overalls and the tools of ship construction 20 years ago.
The Dock Museum at Barrow was hosting a special exhibition on the different roles played by women in the town through the decades - told through pictures, costumes and artefacts.
The Mail, on Tuesday, February 22 in 2000, noted: "Each of the seven showcases in the Ladies' Day Exhibition is dedicated to a different era, bringing history to life with photographs, period books, games, clothes and other memorabilia.
"This display shows that there can be remarkable people in all walks of life, from the privileged life of Lady Michaelson to the hard graft and devotion of Britain's only female lighthouse keeper Peggy Braithwaite."
Also featured was politician Nan Tait OBE and Barrow dance teacher Maud Tranter.
On of the five organisers, Sheila Clark, said: "We could have included hundreds of women in the exhibition, all who have left their own special mark."
