Strapline: Everything from theatre groups to a Guide's trip to Austria have had a big boost from fundraising mornings at the Coronation Hall

MANY thousands of pounds have been raised over the years at coffee mornings held in an iconic South Cumbrian venue and a new season of events starts on Thursday.

The weekly events at the Coronation Hall, Ulverston, all start at 9.30am and give good causes and community groups to boost their funds.

This Thursday it is the turn of Lowick Young Farmers and the following week it will be the Rotary Club of Ulverston.

On February 13 you can enjoy a Fairtrade coffee or tea and find out more about the work of Greener Ulverston.

There will be cakes, bric-a-brac, a raffle and soft mats and toys for the little ones to enjoy.

Back in March 1998 there was an American theme for a coffee morning held to raise find for the ACT theatre company.

Performers in cowboy outfits were outside the hall encouraging shoppers to sample a hot drink and help with costs for the next stage production.

The same month saw Guides, Brownies and Rainbows host an event to raise funds for restoration work to the Guide headquarters at the Gill.

Also at the event was Rebecca Mitchell, a young leader with the 2nd Ulverston Guides, who had been selected to go to Austria with nine others from the North West region to attend the International Guides and Scout Camp at the end of July.

To help raise funds for her ten day trip, She had devised a recipe book and puzzles to sell at the coffee morning.

In December 1998 Carol Campbell, bursar for St Mary's Hospice in Ulverston, received a cheque for £75 at the group's coffee morning.

It was presented by Chris Heslop, ex chief superintendent and chairman of the Barrow branch of the National Association of Retired Police Officers.

The funds were part of the police association's annual presentation of cheques to South Cumbrian charities.

This year’s programme of coffee mornings has an event for Ulverston Methodist Church for Christian Aid on February 20 and Cancer Care on the 27th.

The coffee morning on March 5 in for Ulverston Choral Society and on March 12 it is the turn of Sandside Lodge.

The following Thursdays see events for South Cumbria Music Festival, St John’s Church, Osmotherly, Ulverston Conservatives and Lindale Primary School.
