THE world of fun science came to the unlikely setting of a South Cumbrian drill all as university experts got youngsters to try out a range of activities and experiments.
You could do everything from seeing the colours of the light spectrum in a giant bubble to steering a buggy made from compact discs.
The Mail, on Friday, March 20 in 1998, noted: “Boffins of the future from across Furness found that science can be fun by visiting a special exhibition staged at the Red Rose Social and Recreation Centre, in Ulverston’s drill hall.
“The event, called Fun Science in Cumbria, was organised by the British Association for the Advancement of Science and provided an action-packed programme of hands-on activities.
“Among the attractions for primary school children were a special stardome and an inflatable planetarium.
“Students and tutors came from Lancaster University to run the event.”
Among the schools which brought pupils to the Ulverston event were St Peter’s Church of England School at Ireleth and Penny Bridge School.
