A LEGEND of motorcycle manufacture and a racing champion gave a special feel to the Millennium Classic Motorcycle Show almost 20 years ago.

Bike enthusiasts from all over the North West came to the event at the Victoria Park Hotel, Barrow.

The Mail, on April 11 in 2000, noted: “Len Vale Onslow, a 99-year-old motorbike designer famous for his Super Onslow Special, made a guest appearance.

“The motorbike engineer and manufacturer recently appeared on Michael Aspel’s This is Your Life.

“He retired only six months ago and received an MBE for his outstanding contribution to the world of motor racing.”

Alan Shepherd, the 1958 TT Grand Prix champion, officially opened the show by Furness British Motorcycle Club and brought along his Norton International.

Mr Onslow said: “This is a good event for a local show. I have lived with bikes for my whole life and I recognise all the bikes here.”

All the proceeds from the show were donated to the Child Development Centre at Furness General Hospital.
