GEORGIAN mariners took over a town centre as the 150th anniversary was celebrated for one of South Cumbria’s iconic buildings almost 20 years ago.

The Hoad Monument was completed in 1850 to celebrate the lifetime of achievements by Ulverston-born Sir John Barrow – explorer, author, naval pioneer and Britain’s first long-term civil servant.

The Mail, on Monday, May 15 in 2000, noted: “Ulverston stepped back in time on Saturday when a naval re-enactment group dressed as 18th-century Royal Naval officers, sailors and marines dropped anchor in the town’s Market Place.

“They manned a replica sailing ship erected by the market cross which was the centrepiece for the 150th anniversary celebrations of the Hoad Monument.

“Hundreds of people flocked into the town centre to watch the mocked-up craft, which represented one of the ships sent by Sir John Barrow on voyages of exploration as the long-serving Secretary of the Admiralty.

“There was also colourful street theatre, live music and entertainment.

“Best-selling author Fergus Fleming, who wrote Barrow’s Boys, which recounts the life of the famous Ulverstonian born at Dragley Beck, was also in town visiting Ulverston Heritage Centre.

“The writer toured a special exhibition about Sir John Barrow at the centre.

“The Sky’s the Limited celebrations yesterday went off with a bang when thousands of people climbed up the 100ft tower.

“The Blast Furness Band led a long procession of townsfolk though the town and up to the top of the Hoad.

“With temperatures soaring to the upper seventies mayor Ron Creer was dressed smartly in suit and tie to take part in his last official function as civic leader before stepping down today.

“He was accompanied by a six-strong delegation from Ulverston’s twin town. Albert.

“Highlight of the celebration was the special effects centred on the monument.

“After the mayor fired a naval cannon eight dare-devil volunteers abseiled down the monument.

“Fireworks and smoke bombs were set off and the world’s biggest banner was successfully flown.

“Scores of people flew their kites and families held picnics on Hoad making a wonderful sight.

“Ulverston Town Band, also celebrating its 150th birthday, entertained the large crowds.”
