IT was an event not to be missed as some former pupils travelled thousands of miles to take part in a reunion of Barrow Grammar School girls.
The event at the Lisdoonie Hotel, on Abbey Road, in 2000, marked a half-century since they started their studies on what is now the site of Furness Academy.
The Mail, on Tuesday, September 12, noted: “As the majority of the girls are now 61, the emphasis was on recalling who was who, although this was no problem for the oldest member of the party – former headmistress, Janet Wells, now aged 93.
“Some of the girls flew in from all over the world to be at the function.”
Former pupils arrived from Australia, Spain, USA and New Zealand.
One of the organisers, Jackie O’Neill, nee Marklew, said: “The whole night was simply wonderful, so good that now we are thinking of making it an annual event.”
