SCORES of people will be getting dressed up to raise cash this week for Children in Need.

We are taking a look back 20 years to events held in South Cumbria to support the national fundraising campaign.

To date the appeal has raised in excess of a billion pounds.

This year's BBC Children in Need TV show is on Friday, November 15, with the star-studded line-up including Rylan Clark-Neal, Tess Daly and Fleur East.

The Mail, on Saturday, November 27, in 1999, noted: "Generous Cumbrians raised almost £50,000 for Children In Need last night with more donations still flooding in.

"The amount raised by the end of the evening totalled £49,103 in the region, with a staggering £662,396 raised in the whole of the North West.

"Thousands of people turned out in Barrow's new town square to see Pudsey Bear join the Alfred Barrow School Choir, the cast of the Christmas panto Robin Hood and the Barracudas on stage.

"This year's Children In Need appeal coincided with the town's Christmas lights being switched on."

Barrow's Lynwood Day Nursery got in the mood for Children In Need day by getting their faces painted in the Pudsey Bear fashion.

Staff at the BT Control Centre in Barrow raised £80 by having a cake-making contest.

It was judged by Nicola Biggins, of Thorncliffe, and the winner was Ann Tyson, of Walney.

Krys and Mike Mulgrew, from Walney, spent a day in bed inside Dandys shop window, on Duke Street, Barrow, and raised more than £200 for the appeal.

The Booths supermarket at Ulverston collected £720 for the appeal from shoppers and Cannons Health Club, Barrow, added £160 after gym manager Dave Marks received a leg wax from therapist Melanie Rowntree. (281)

Members of the Drifters Line Dancing Club kept going from 7pm to midnight in a marathon dance session held at Barrow Town Hall. All the moves were called by instructor Bernardine Boyd.

Robert Newton, of Barrow, raised £400 by having his locks shaved by hairdresser Julie Brown.

Youngsters at Haverigg School, near Millom, organised their own stalls, selling toys and challenging people to guess the name of the teddy bear at 10p a go.

Pupils at Millom School held a donation day helped by headteacher Les Higgins and matron Dorothy Vernon and the Gazebo on Barrow's Dalton Road was the scene of an outdoor concert by players from Red Rose Brass.
