THERE was plenty of shouting and cheering as youngsters from a Furness School made a big splash at their swimming gala back in 2001.
Barrow's Greengate Junior School pupils took their costumes and towels to the Park Leisure Centre, Barrow, for the annual event.
The Mail, on Saturday, March 31, noted: "Teams of youngsters competed against each other and swam widths and lengths, including relay races.
"All children who are confident swimmers took part in the gala."
Greengate School PE teacher Janine Leonard said: "We hold it each year to celebrate our achievements and success.
"We do spend more than the curriculum time in PE on swimming.
"Because we live so close to the sea and the docks we can justify it because children need to know how to swim."
The school team at Greengate Junior was coached by the Barrow Paralympics swimming silver medallist Shaun Uren.
