Walney was a North West hotspot for falls and had more over 60s taking a tumble than in any other part of the region, according to figures from the North West Ambulance Service.

Vicar of Ulpha, the Reverend R. Greenwood, won the quarter-mile race at the Duddon Valley Sports at Seathwaite. He also finished second in the egg-and-spoon race.

The Barrow and District Kennel Association held its show at Pennington Memorial Hall.

Celebrations were held to mark the 60 th anniversary of Hawcoat Methodist Church at Cliffe Lane, Barrow.
