A GROUP of Barrow Sea Cadets from the Training Ship Sovereign returned from a trip to Nottingham in September 1991 as national champions.
The team of Raymond Houlding, Robert Harris, Dean Brown, Sam McKenna, Kevin Corkill and Jamie Minhinnick came home with the Ridgwell Trophy from the National Regatta at Nottingham.
The team became county champions in May, which secured a place in regional finals at Winsford before sweeping the national board.
In October 1987 Barrow Sea Cadets helped set up a fundraising fashion show at Whispers nightclub.
That month each year sees Barrow Sea Cadets in more traditional outfits for the Trafalgar Day Ball, marking the nation’s greatest naval success led by Lord Nelson in 1805.
