10 YEARS AGO

Members of South Lakeland District Council scrapped plans to charge for evening car parking. It had been predicted that the charges would bring in £100,000 a year but were met with protests, particularly from people in Ulverston town centre who were unable to park outside their own houses.

A semi-detached house at Meadowlands Avenue, Barrow, was offered for sale at £145,000. A terraced house at Gladstone Terrace, Barrow, was £130,000.

Weekend drinkers at the Greyhound Inn at Grizebeck were invited to step behind the bar and pull their own pint of Ennerdale beer.

25 YEARS AGO

Ulverston artists Wendy and Billy Kolbe opened an exhibition of their work in Market Place, Ulverston.

A semi-detached house at Highlands Avenue, Barrow, was £47,950. A terraced house at Barton Street, Barrow, was £21,950.

Ulverston was to receive a boost to its tourist trade from signs showing the way to the town for drivers leaving the M6.

Work started on a major renewal of water mains in Ulverston and Dalton which was to cost £3.5m.

50 YEARS AGO

The 53 members of the Barrow Sea Cadet Unit and Marine Cadet Detachment went on parade for the annual Admiralty inspection by Cmdr T. St Vaughan, the area officer for the North West and Northern Ireland.

William and Mary Hodges pulled their last pints at the Empress Hotel, Ulverston, after 40 years behind the bar.

The top priced tickets were 35p for Barrow performances of the musical My Fair Lady at the Public Hall.
