Duddon Bridge, near Millom, was to be closed on five consecutive nights for road repairs — leaving motorists with a detour of up to 87 miles.

The recession was being blamed for a 35 per cent increase in robberies across Cumbria.

25 YEARS AGO
Work was due to start soon on a new teaching centre for children with special needs at Newbarns House, on Lesh Lane, Barrow.
Herman's Hermits and the Cavern Beatles were to play at Ulverston's Coronation Hall in March in a charity concert organised by Baycliff women Lilian Dawson and Barbara Harrison.
Barrow's former Roose Hospital was put up for sale by the Northern Regional Health Authority. It had been opened as a workhouse in 1880 and later became a hospital.
Millom was to become a smoke-free zone from April 1 next year — despite objections from residents.
50 YEARS AGO
Around 2,000 Barrow shipyard fitters voted at a mass meeting to end a six-month dispute over who did tests on submarine pipes. The strike had cost an estimated £1m in lost wages.
The appeal fund to repair the Sir John Barrow Monument at Ulverston reached £2,300. Donations had come from both Canada and the United States. Other gifts came from the Royal Geographical Society.
