REGULARS at traditional Barrow pubs would look forward to a summer outing by bus.

This picture from 1929 shows drinkers at the Sun Hotel, on Church Street, ready for a day out in Whitehaven.

It was kindly provided by Howard Cowley, of Worcester Park, in south west London, who was brought up on Walney and makes regular returns to the Barrow district.

The Sun Hotel opened with a celebration supper given by James Waddington in 1866.

By 1875 the hotel was let to Boddingtons of Manchester and was sold to Barrow brewers James Thompson in 1885.

It closed in 1975.

At one time was a hostel for the homeless.
