TRAVEL mishaps feature strongly in Trains & Boats & Planes, a new booklet in the Kirkby Fragments series from the History of Kirkby Group.

In 1939 the village saw both a rail crash and an emergency aircraft landing on the fells.

The August collision between two trains at Kirkby station left 30 people injured.

And on July 28 Secretary of State for Air, Sir Kingsley Wood, had been among high profile passengers on a plane forced down in bad weather.

The booklet also features glider flights by aviation enthusiasts from Kirkby Moor and the grounding of a sailing ship called the Mary Goldsworthy after it broke free from its moorings across the Duddon Estuary at Millom.

You can find out more about the £3.50 booklet on the website at www.history-of-kirkby.org

Copies of the book at £3.50, plus £2 postage, and can be ordered by sending an email to alaric42@sky.com or can be purchased at Moorland Stores on the main road through Kirkby.

The group's first history talk of the year is by Dan Elsworth, of the Ulverston-based Greenland Archaeology from 2pm on February 19 at the Beckside Rooms, Kirkby. All are welcome.
