BARROW'S former Catholic Youth Centre, in Nelson Street, was transformed into the district's first shared community building back in 1994.
The Mail, on October 18, noted: "Cumbria County Council, Barrow Borough Council and the voluntary sector joined forces to tackle some of the community issues which have been created through reduced job opportunities in Barrow.
"They have made their base in the new-look resource centre."
The Nelson Street Community Centre was shared by Cumbria Youth Service and the Community Association."
Development officer Stuart Finnie said: "This is the first resource centre for the voluntary sector that Barrow has ever had."
It hosted music and dance, a rock school, talent contests and adult learner courses.
In January 1997 is was the base for a Rock School for students aged 15 to 24, which won funding from Cumbria Tec, The People's Trust, Barrow Council and music shop Northern Sounds.
Grants paid for guitars, a drum kit and sessions with professional musicians.
