IT is now 19 years since the first of the sculptures arrived at Barrow's Abbey Road for a revamp of the Coronation Gardens, between the town's courts and the Emlyn Hughes House office block.

The sandstone crown, called the Chess Queen, was unloaded on December 2 in 1999 — supervised by London-based artist Tim Shutter.

An article in The Mail noted that the work was six months behind schedule and was to form part of three-year public art programme costing £521,000.

It noted: "The money for the new public art projects, which include banners in Dalton Road and a new centrepiece for the Craven Park roundabout, has come from the National Lottery."

At a borough council meeting it was said the yellow bricks being used were out of keeping and did not complement the ambience of the town.
