THE kind of entertainment provided in Barrow's music halls was recreated in 1992 when youngsters got dressed up to bring music and fun to the elderly.

Pupils from St Pius X School put on old time music hall acts in the school hall on July 16.

A night at the music hall was a noisy, brash experience in Victorian and Edwardian Barrow — hours of entertainment for the price of a few pennies.

Often 1,000 or more people could be packed into a relatively small space — standing, or sitting on benches or at tables.

Acts could vary from jugglers and contortionists to comedians and singers.

Barrow's pioneering venue in 1867 was the Alexandra Music Hall and Theatre of Varieties, in Forshaw Street. The Royal Alhambra Palace and Music Hall followed in 1871.
