Dalton St Mary's CE Primary became only the third school in Cumbria to achieve the ICT Mark for information and communications technology.

Furness MP John Hutton officially threw his weight behind the creation of a dual-site campus for the planned academy in Barrow. It would replace the existing schools of Alfred Barrow, Thorncliffe and Parkview.

Ulverston was to get the major part of a £1.3m expansion plan by Glaxo Laboratories. The firm was seeking to meet demand for an anti-biotic called Ceporin.

Road links with Furness were being neglected by the Ministry of Transport, claimed Ulverston Urban District Councillor W. J. O'neill. He claimed the area was the worst served in Lancashire.
