BARROW Park was filled with the sound of marching feet back in 1996 as a group of fundraisers set off on a sponsored walk to highlight the work of the British Heart Foundation.
The Mail on Monday, September 23, noted: "The two-mile walk from the Leisure Centre was part of national Walkabout UK designed to help raise £200,000 to fight heart disease.
"Walkers included Barrow Weight Watchers and heart transplant patient Bill Bell.
"The Barrow event was one of 100 being organised throughout the country on coastlines,in the grounds of stately homes and in country parks.
"The cash is needed to help combat Britain's biggest single killer — heart and circulatory disease.
"It claims a new victim every two minutes."
