GETTING soaked became part of the fun as Furness folk braved the elements to watch a spectacular demonstration of how to deal with a fire at sea.
The Mail on Monday, July 25 in 1994 noted: “Torrential rain failed to dampen spirits at the Royal National Lifeboat Institution’s gala.
“The awful weather drove the usual sea-front stalls inside the Roa Island Boat Club.
“Both the lifeboats were launched and the day’s highlight was a firefighting display at sea.”
The annual event raised £900 towards the work of the sea rescue steam.
It was noted: “There were cake, plant and book stalls and tombolas, a Punch and Judy show and face painting.”
Barrow Ladies’ Life Boat Guild secretary Joyce Tull said: “It was an absolutely excellent day considering the weather.”
Among those to brave the weather at Roa Island was Barrow mayor Cllr Betty Wilacy and Rampside gala queen Rebecca Hadwin.
