10 YEARS AGO

Ulverston Outsiders presented the comedy Arsenic and Old Lace at the Coronation Hall. The cast included Colin Kendall, Jean Hunt and Bridget Brice.

There was a total of 81 exhibits at the annual show held by Barrow Society of Artists at Barrow Central Library.

A semi-detached house at Moorgarth, Swarthmoor, was offered for sale at £167,000. A detached bungalow at Hallfield, Ulverston, was £229,950.

The family advice charity Home-Start South Cumbria had moved into a new base at Steamer Street, Barrow. The Barrow Island councillor Eric Wood performed the official opening.

25 YEARS AGO

Six pupils from Thorncliffe School, Barrow, travelled to the Lilleshall National Sports to represent the North of England in basketball's National Inter Area Tournament. They were Stuart Anderson, Stuart Managh, Gareth France, Mark Edwards, David Cole and Symon Smith.

Guard dogs and an electrified perimeter fence were needed at Haverigg prison, near Millom, said South Lakeland councillor Joss Curwen, who represented Broughton.

A terraced house in Athol Street, Barrow, was offered for sale at £26,750. A detached house at Stainton Drive, Barrow, was £77,950.

50 YEARS AGO

Minister of Transport Richard Marsh announced that plans had been dropped to close the coastal railway line between Barrow and Whitehaven. It was among 135 loss-making lines which were deemed socially desirable to keep open.

South Cumberland Water Board had a surplus of £2,000 at the end of the financial year — down from £5,000 in the previous year.
