SPECTATORS lined the harbour walls outside Barrow's Dock Museum in 1996 to welcome youngsters who had spent a week at sea to learn how to sail traditional tall ships.

The Mail, on Monday, October 14 in 1996, noted: "After a fairly straightforward voyage up the coast from Liverpool, the Ocean Youth Club ketches were greeted by a large crowd."

Francis Drake and Greater Manchester Challenge were berthed in the museum's dock on Saturday for visitors to take a close look.

It noted: "Crowds turned out on Sunday to watch them leave as Jubilee Bridge opened to let them through.

"The two ketches are used to give youngsters a taste of life aboard the ocean wave."

More youngsters were picked from Ramsden Dock to experience a week at sea.
